When we have pure protein, we try to turn it into crystals. This process sometimes works, but sometimes does not ! Many different conditions are tried to see if beautiful crystals will grow. This is a frustrating job, but worth it for the results.

Crystals are typically less than one millimetre long, so that most handling has to be done under a microscope. Our next job is to take the crystal out of the liquid in which it is grown, in a way that allows us to hit it with a fine beam of X-rays.
