The graph below shows the incredible growth in the number of protein sequences in one of the main sequence databases (green). The red blocks show the increase in the number of protein structures known. The graph is deceptive. The rate at which new protein structures become available is also increasing rapidly but still lags a number of years behind the sequence databases. The ability to guess protein structure from amino acid sequence would, therefore, be very useful.
