The DNA Structure

Left: The chains in the double-helix model are formed by a backbone of "phosphodiester" units that lie on the outside of the structure...

Middle: ... The backbone carries a series of chemical building blocks called "bases". Each of these points towards the other spiraling strand of the DNA. The order or "sequence" of these bases along the chain forms the genetic code.

Right: Two chains of backbones and bases running in opposite directions form the double helical structure. The pairs of bases in the centre of the structure join the two chains together.
